YWCA Muskoka Invites Men to Walk A Mile in Her Shoes®
Muskoka - On Sunday, May 28th, men from Muskoka and beyond will be stepping up in red high heel shoes in a fun, social light-hearted event with a serious side. Over its first two years, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Muskoka walkers have raised over $30,000 - this year organizers hope to engage 100 walkers and raise $20,000 to raise funds for violence prevention initiatives that the YWCA delivers to women, girls and boys across the region of Muskoka.
Participants can sign up as an individual or as a team for the event at www.walkamilemuskoka.ca. On this web site, participants can join a team, challenge others to walk, share a video, and set their personal goal. Family, friends and co-workers can support their favourite walker or team by making donations online. While the event is primarily men walking, organizers are also recruiting 'Sole Sisters' who champion their team and 'Blister Sisters' help help recruit walkers, give out shoes, cheer and assist walkers along the route.
"I'm excited that we are partnering with the Annie Williams Picnic in the Park to bring two great family friendly events together this year," said Hannah Lin, YWCA Muskoka Executive Director. "Paul Davis Muskoka, our Sandals Sponsor will be there with their team to help the guys find their perfect shoe size and we look forward to making this year an even greater success."
Walk A Mile in Her Shoes® is a fundraising event where men put themselves in the shoes of women by walking in heels in support of a good cause. Each year across North America, an ever-increasing number of men, women and their families are joining Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®: It's not easy walking in these shoes, but it's fun, it raises awareness, and gets the community talking about something that's really difficult to talk about: gender relations and men's sexual violence against women.
The event runs from 11 to 2 pm. Walkers are encouraged to arrive to register and pick up shoes at 11 am at Annie Williams Park and the Walk gets underway at 12 pm. Prize presentations for Best Dressed, Best Team Spirit and Supreme Sole Sister will be followed by the family picnic, BBQ provided by the Bracebridge Lions Club, and live entertainment.
YWCA Muskoka champions positive change for women and girls and envisions all women and girls thriving in a safe community of possibility.
